Defined media is also called synthetic media of which the composition is known. this media have pure ingredients in definite ratio. It contains a energy and carbon source such as sugar, several mineral salts such as magnesium nitrate , calcium chloride, ammonium sulfate, sodium phosphate, and potassium hypophosphate., vitamins, amino acids, nitrogenous source and several other growth factors required for the growth of microorganisms. it is used for growth of chemoautotrophic, and photoautotrophic microorganisms.

Complex media - also called non synthetic media have rich source of nutrients such as animal extract and plant extract , glucose as energy and carbon source, but their composition is not known. It is used for the growth of heterotrophic organisms. e,g, Nutrient agar media

Selective media- Selective media is a type of media which promote the growth of one type of microorganisms to grow in that media while at the same time inhibiting the the growth of other microorganisms grown in same media. for e.g. use of certain sugar as carbon source, by adding antibiotics, dyes, salts, inhibitors which are responsible for affecting the growth and development of that specific microorganisms. e.g. Mannitol salt agar media for pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Differential media-  Differential media are used for the differentiation between the group of closely related microorganisms . in this media presence of certain chemicals, dye inhibit the growth of one microorganisms and promote the growth of one specific type of microorganisms.e. g. MacCONKEY'S AGAR in which the lactose fermenting microorganisms produce dye and changes the pH of media and changes the color of media to yellow. while those non fermenting microorganisms remain colorless.
