during metaphase, the chromosome ( chromosome have 2 sister chromatids attached to the centromere) align at the metaphase plate.

mitotic spindle starts to form during prophase, these mitotic spindles attach to the kinetochore, kinetochore is a protein complex at the centromere of the protein.

during anaphase, the sister chromatids are separated and moves to opposite poles, this is due to the depolymerization of the microtubules attached to the centromeres of the chromosome.

so the answer is microtubules attached to the centromere begin to shorten.
