The function of quinone of ubiquinone is to accept electrons from complex 1 and complex 2. Complex 1 gains electron after the oxidation of NADH and complex 2 gains electron after the oxidation of FADH2. Both of these complexes pass on their electrons to quinone of ubiquinone which gets reduced into ubiquinol. Than the electrons are passed on to complex 3. Thus ubiquinone is a mobile electron carrier located in the inner mitochondrial membrane and quinone is the main reaction centre of this molecule which accept and donate electrons.

In electron transfer, only the quinone portion of Coenzyme Q (ubiquinone, UQ) undergoes oxidation-reduction; the extremely long isoprenoid side chain remains unchanged. What is the function of this chain?
