Respiration is the process of breakdown of sugar for the production of carbon dioxide and water and ATP molecules.

In the presence of oxygen it is called as aerobic respiration in which the final electron acceptor is oxygen.

But in the absence of oxygen it is called as anaerobic respiration. Final electron acceptor in anaerobic respiration is pyruvic acid, sulphate, nitrate. It takes place in anaerobic bacteria like nitrogen fixing bacteria, sulphur oxidizing bacteria etc.
