Here is a hierarchy of levels of organization in the Mono Lake ecosystem.

molecules in a brine shrimp -->cells in a brine shrimp--> organs in a brine shrimp--> brine shrimp individuals--> populations of brine shrimp --> communities of organisms in mono lake --> how the salinity of the lake affects the communities of organisms in the lake.

Use any part of this hierarchy (ie choose two levels) to point out an example of "emergent properties, and explain your choice, so that I know you understand

  • what emergent properties mean, and
  • one or two things about brine shrimp and their environment

Your answer should be at least three unique sentences.

Answer #1

Salinity is an important property for lake water. Salinity of lakes depend on various conditions like precipitation, wind, temperature etc Salinity also mentain chemical conditions of a lake. If salinity of a lake become so high or too less organisms of that lake face severe problem due to their osmotic balance become disturb. osmosis help to balance salt concentration inside or outside of the body. If salinity become high , it decreases dissolved oxygen level in the lake and this will affect the organisms of the lake.

Emergent properties meaning unit of a system and they construct a whole system but individually this unit has no ability to do any work. Here molecule of a brine shrimp and cell of a brine shrimp help to make whole organism and these oraganisms build community but cells and molecules individually have no impact on lake ecosytem.

Brine shrimp is an aquitic crustaceans and it is generally found in worldwide oceans and salt marshes. Brine shrimp take planktonic algae as food. It is found in salt lakes and it can tolerate changing levels of salt and temperature. They can easily being predate by their predator. But as they can survive in varing salt and temperature condition but their predator can not survive in such condition. Thus brine shrimps become safe from their predator.
