The oldest known fossil vertebrates were Myllokunmingia and Haikouichthys which belonged to the early Cambrian period and a type of fish which were heavily armored and belonged to the Ordovician period. They possessed a rudimentary vertebrate. The oldest vertebrates and proto-vertebrates had a marine origin.

In the evolution of vertebrates advent of definitive neural crest played a vital role. With evolution, vertebrates gradually evolved a proper vertebral column, jaws and an endoskeleton. With time the vertebrate body became more complex.
