Answer #1

Assuming that, the gene causing white spot y is dominant over the gene producing no spot is Y.

So, the genotype of white spot producing hamster is Yy and the genotype of no spot producing hamster is YY.

In first case, when white spot producing hamster crosses with no spot producing hamster the progenies are:

Yy       X      YY

Y

y

Y

YY

Yy

Y

YY

Yy

So, we can see here that ½ of the offspring have white spot and ½ of the offspring have no spot.

In second case, when white spot producing hamster crosses with white spot producing hamster the progenies are:

Yy        X          Yy

Y

y

Y

YY

Yy

y

Yy

yy

So, we can see here that 2/3 (Yy,yy) of the offspring have white spot and 1/3 of the offspring have no spot.

(a) From the above explanation, we can say that the white spot producing gene is recessive dominant gene.

(b) It is also possible to produce Chinese hamster that are true breeding (homozygous) for white spotting and we can also saw this in the above second cross.
