Urochordata 1600 species are also known as tunicates that belong to phylum urochordata. The name tunicate is derived from tunic which is cellulose in structure.
Usually chordates like mammalia, amphibians and cephalochordata possess four characteristic features like pharyngeal slit, notochord, post anal tail and dorsal hallow nerve cord.
But the larvae stage of urochordata species contain all the above characteristic features but lose their post anal tail and notochord in their adult stage.
