1A: Alcohol fermentation in step 13 will occur from pyruvate using anaerobic fermentation. Pyruvate is obtained from glycolysis. Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose to pyruvate via series of step requiring ATP. Pyruvate is converted by engineered strain to produce ethanol and CO2. Initially acetaldehyde and CO2 are produced. Acetaldehyde is then converted to ethanol.

Sucrose is a disaccharide of glucose and fructose. However, C. brescii modified strain uses cellulose as substrate to undergo glycolysis. Graphite cannot undergo glycolysis. Fatty acids undergo beta oxidation to form acetyl CoA.

1B. Box 8 product is a byproduct of cellulose synthesis and is used for cellulose hydrolysis. Cellulose is synthesized from glucose. Glucose molecules will lose H+ and OH- to from cellulose.

Removal of OH- and H+ from a compounds results in formation of H20 (water). This water can then be used for cellulose hydrolysis to form glucose. Cellulose is a polymer of glucose.
