Usually, DNA polymerase removes the incorrect base via proofreading if it misses to remove an incorrect base, it will be repaired via mismatch repair, if the mismatch repair fails to remove the mismatched base it will be inherited to the daughter cells.

a single basepair mutation will not cause cell death.
