5. Lysine is an essential aminoacid required for the formation of proteins in bacteria, it is also needed in the formation of peptidoglycan cell wall in bacteria. Strains A and B are able to synthesize lysine and hence they are able to survive and grow. Strain C is not able to synthesize lysin and hence it is not able to grow.

5. In the strains A and B, gene / genes involved in the synthesis of lysine are active and hence are able to synthesize lysine. In the strain C, one of genes required for the synthesis of lysine may have mutated and hence not able to synthesize lysine. Since lysine is very essential for bacterial survival, the strain C has not grown in lysine deficient medium.
