Answer #1

As the action potential reaches the axon terminals, the vesicles carrying the neurotransmitters fuse with the plasma membrane of the axon terminals and release neurotransmitters to the synpatic cleft, if the action potential is increased ( nerons are fired more frequently) the amount of neurotransmitter released increases, so the answer is A) Increase.

Scientists would like to test if there is a difference between the mean amount of nicotine in menthol cigarettes and the mean amount of nicotine in non-menthol cigarettes. The scientists collect a simple random sample of 25 menthol cigarettes and 25 non-menthol cigarettes. Both samples consist of cigarettes that are filtered, 100 mm long, and non-light. The menthol cigarettes have a mean nicotine amount of 0.87 mg and a standard deviation of 0.24 mg. The non-menthol cigarettes have a mean...

Can someone please explain to me in detail how to do this problem? Which of the following would increase the response in the post-synaptic cell (i.e., stimulate it more)? A) Drug that inhibits enzymatic breakdown of neurotransmitter in synapse B) Either of these (both increase) C) Drug that blocks re-uptake of neurotransmitter D) Neither of these

You are studying a cell that contains ACh-activated GIRK channels. Which of the following dimers would increase the ability of the cell to fire action potentials in the presence of ACh, and why? a. β-γ dimer, becasue this dimer decreases the amount of open GIRK channels in the cell and therefore reduces their hyperpolarizing effect on the cell, increasing its ability to fire an action potential. b. α-GDP dimer, because this dimer would bind to the β-γ dimer leading to...

Cell # 1 forms an excitatory synapse onto cell # 2 , when cell #1 fires a single action potential it releases glutamate onto the membrane of cell #2 resulting in a 5 millivolt depolarization, a 5 mV excitatory postsynaptic potential, when cell #1 fires three action potentials in rapid succession this causes a 15 mV depolarization in cell #2 resulting in cell #2 reaching threshold and firing its own action potential. Cell #1 Cell #2 +40 Vm IN Cell...

Waterways is thinking of mass-producing one of its special order sprinklers. To do so would increase variable costs for a sprinklers by an average of $0.70 per unit. The company also estimates that this change could increase the overall number of sprinklers sold by 10%, and the average sales price would increase $0.20 per unit Waterways currently sells 481,000 sprinkler units at an average selling price of $25.20. The manufacturing costs are $5,811,160 variable and $2,155,660 fixed. Selling and administrative...

During the propagation of an action potential, what would be the effect of a mutation in the voltage-gated Na+-channels that does not allow “inactivation” phase to occur, such that these channels go directly from open to closed conformations? a) The neuron with the mutant Na+ channels will start letting in calcium ions and generate a calcium-based action potential that is stronger than the sodium-based action potential. b) The neuron with the mutant Na+ channel will exhibit a reverse electrochemical gradient...

Question 5 (1 point) If you were to decrease the concentration of extracellular Na+ what would be the effect on the resting potential (and would it be a large or small effect)? What would the effect be on the action potential (and again would this be a large or small effect)?   Question 5 options: A) There would be little or no effect on the resting potential, but the action potential amplitude would decrease by a large amount. B) The resting...

Please fill in the blank. When an action potential moves to a nerve cell’s terminals, ------ ions enter from the extracellular environment through gated channels to promote vesicle movement. ------ are chemicals responsible for the movement of a single across a synapse between two adjacent nerve cells.   Regarding heterotrimeric G protein, the ------- subunit binds to and stimulates adenylyl cyclase (AC). In heterotrimeric G proteins, the ------- and ------- subunits(s) stimulate phospholipase C. The a-subunit of a heterotrimeric G protein...
