Conjugation is mechanism of transferring genetic material in bacteria either directly through cell to cell contact or through a bridge like connection known as pilus. This sort of process is equivalent to sexual reproduction as it involves exchange of genetic material. This process is often possible due to genetic element called plasmid. The genetic information transferred from donor to recipient cell is generally of antibiotic resistance, to synthesise particular protein, etc.
