Answer #1

Protein are polymers of amino acids, amino acid are divided in two categories: essential and non essential. Non essential amino acids are those which can be formed by body and essential amino acids are those which cannot be synthesized by the body and thus consume in diet to fulfill it's requirement.

Essential Non-essential 1. Histidine 2. Isoleucine 3. Leucine 4. Lysine 5. Methionine 6. Phenylalanine 7. Threonine 8. Trypto

To fulfill the need of essential amino acids, protein source are divided into two part,

  1. Complete Protein source, contain all the essential amino acids. Examples, Soy, some vegitables (like broccoli), quinoa, etc.
  2. Incomplete Protien source, lack one or more essential amino acids. For example, legumes (except soy) are low in methionine, while grains, nuts, and seeds are low in lysine. That means if you’re consuming only legumes, you may not be getting enough of the amino acid methionine. On the other hand, if you’re only consuming grains, nuts, or seeds, you may not have sufficient lysine.

When incomplete protein food are taken in combination to fulfill all the essential amino acid requirements are known as complementary proteins. For those who consume less aminal protein of mainly depend on vegan food source, complementary proteins are required to maintain their protien requirement.

Combinations of complementary proteins includes:

  • Lentils or legumes with grains, nuts/seeds or dairy
  • Grain foods with dairy products
  • Dairy with nuts and/or seeds.

If we consider the above given diets,

  1. Peanut butter with grains is an complementary protein. Peanuts are low in methionine and grains are low in lysine. So when we consume them together we get all the essential amino acids.
  2. Pasta salad with broccoli and walnuts is also an complementary protein. Pasta and walnut is low in lysin but brocoli have all 9 essential amino acids. So it can be used as complementary food. Only pasta with walnut would not be considered as complementary food.
  3. pasta with tofu, tomatoes and vegitable sauce is also a complementary food, as tofu have completed protein so when consume with pasta it fulfill all the essential amino acod requirement.
  4. Tomatoes with green peppers and lettuce in combination do not fulfill requirements of all essential amino acids. Therefore it is not complementary protein.
  5. Beans with rice is also complementary protein food, as beans low in methionine and rice is low in lysine. When they are consumed together they fulfill requirements for all essential amino acids.
