I am asked to calculate the Crude Birth Rate (CBR) for a consumer population. The mid-year population is given as x number of females and y number of males. There are z number of births to all women. Should the calculation for CBR be:

a) CBR = [z/(x+y+z)]*1000

OR

b) CBR = [z/(x+y)]*1000

i.e. do the newborn babies count as part of the denominator of 'total mid-year population'??

Answer #1

Answer : The correct option is b .

Crude birth rate shows the new live birth rate per 1000 population in a year. Here population is considered as mid-year population. The formula of crude birth rate is

Crude birth rate (CBR) =( Live new born babies / Mid-year total population ) * 1000
