Why is a process as complex as the citric acid cycle actually an economical way for cells to do their metabolic business? How does the citric acid cycle interact with other pathways that we have talked about in this class? Do such overlaps between the citric acid cycle and other pathways enhance or hinder overall metabolic efficiency?

The citric acid cycle is a complex steps bearing cycle. It takes place in the mitochondrial matrix. It leads to generate the ATP by substrate level phosphorylation. When the succinyl co enzyme A is converted into succinate in the presence of succinyl co A synthetase, then ATP is generated. FADH2 and NADH are also generated in the citric acid cycle. FADH2 and NADH act as an electron carrier. When such electron carrier are participated in the electron transport chain, then they lead to synthesis of large amount of ATP. And these large number of ATPs are used in metabolic process. That's why citric acid cycle actually an economical way for cells to do their metabolic business.
