As a shareholder of a pharmaceutical firm that announced a new investment to develop an Ebola vaccine and, that as a result, your dividend (as a shareholder) would be reduced substantially. Would you support or not support, as a shareholder, the firm's decision to spend your dividend monies to combat Ebola? Why?
answer....
The virus of Ebola was first discovered in 1976 in Sudan and Zaire
still there is no significant vaccine which can cure Ebola. In the
absence of any effective vaccine , the treatment of Ebola is done
through indirect measures. From 1976 to till now, there have been
almost 25 outbreaks of Ebola and mostly African countries are worst
affected by this virus.
One of the main reasons for having no vaccine for Ebola is that not
enough investment is made in the R&D of Ebola treatment as this
virus is mainly related to African countries which do not have
enough purchasing power and thus it is not a fruitful market for
pharmaceutical firms.
As in the case, it is proposed that one of the pharmaceutical firm
decides in favor of investment in R&D of Ebola cure, so as an
investor I would definitely praise this initiative despite having
some losses on the investment made in the form of shares of that
firm.
The main reason behind supporting this decision s that it is the
ethical duty of every individual to provide the relief to other
individuals from the pain and discomfort which is caused by Ebola
virus. There are numerous deaths and many are struggling with Ebola
and despite that there is no significant initiatives from the
pharmaceutical firms only because of business greed.
Being the part of the society and the world, only churning profit
should not be the objective of the business organisation. These
firms have their greater responsibilities towards mankind and thus
the attempts should be made to find out the cure and medicine of
this deadly virus.
As the continent of Africa is worst affected by this virus and due
to the poor economic conditions, the citizens of these countries
are not able to take care of themselves and their relatives who are
suffering from this illness. As these countries are economically
deprive and do not have enough financial resource to finance these
costly investment in R&D , thus it becomes more of a ethical
responsibility of all the pharmaceutical firms to find the cure of
Ebola virus.

You work at an investment firm. Your colleague has an investment thesis that he presents at your firm's investment committee meeting. He has built a sophisticated model, based on a number of financial statement data items (e.g., accruals, interest payment coverage, various cash flow metrics, etc.) which predicts which firms will announce, within the next three months, that they are reducing (cutting) their dividends. He performs appropriate statistical tests and finds that his model works well-t successfully predicts these announcements...

You develop the following information. Your firm has a target capital structure of 70% common equity, 5% preferred stock and 25% debt. The firm's tax rate is 25%. The firm can issue up to $200,000 worth of debt at a before-tax cost of 9%. Then it will cost the firm 11% before-tax on debt up to $400,000 After that point, the before-tax cost of debt will be 13%. The firm's preferred stock carries an...
5. Financial management decisions and their effect on firm value Financial managers make a variety of decisions that can affect a firm's value. These include capital budgeting, capital structure, and dividend policy decisions. A financial manager's decisions and actions are evaluated against the criterion of their effect on the price of the firm's common stock. Good decisions result in increasing share prices and increasing shareholder wealth, while poor decisions achieve the opposite result. Many of the financial decisions that affect...
(Individual or component costs of capital) Your firm is considering a new investment proposal and would like to calculate its weighted average cost of capital. To help in this, compute the cost of capital for the firm for the following: a. A bond that has a $1,000 par value (face value) and a contract or coupon interest rate of 12.1 percent that is paid semiannually. The bond is currently selling for a price of $1,123 and will mature in 10...
If a firm plans to issue new stock, flotation costs (investment bankers' fees) should not be ignored. There are two approaches to use to account for flotation costs. The first approach is to add the sum of flotation costs for the debt, preferred, and common stock and add them to the initial investment cost. Because the investment cost is increased, the project's expected rate of return is reduced so it may not meet the firm's hurdle rate for acceptance of...
