Question

4) Sn2 is a stronger oxidizing agent than Fear because it has a larger (more positive) reduction potential. a. Determine a metal that could be oxidized with a Sn2 solution but not a Fe solution. b. Build an electrochemical cell that could harness this spontaneous redox reaction to generate electricity. You may either draw a picture or describe the cell using cell notation.

Answer #1

a)metal that can oxidized Sn2+ but not Fe2+

Sn4+ + 2 e− ⇌ Sn2+ +0.15

Fe2+ + 2 e− ⇌ Fe(s) −0.44

the metal must be betwee

-0.44 and 0.15:

Cd2+ + 2 e− ⇌ Cd(s) −0.40 will do

b)

cathode --> reduction, so Sn2+

anode --> Cd2+, oxidation
