Phosgene (ClCOCl) is the acid chloride of carbonic acid. Although phosgene was used as a war gas in World War I, it is now used as a reagent for synthesis of many useful products. Phosgene reacts like other acid chlorides, but it can react twice. Show how you would use phosgene to synthesize t-butyloxycarbonyl chloride, (CH3)3COCOCl,an important reagent for the synthesis of peptides and proteins.

(15 points): Phosgene (COC2) is a highly toxic gas that was used as a chemical warfare agent in World War l. Although it is now banned for that purpose by international agreement, phosgene is still produced for industrial uses (where it must be handled very carefully!) 13 SN1: Synthesis of tert-Butyl Chloride Alkyl halides can be prepared from their corresponding alcohols via an acid catalyzed substitution reaction. The mechanism of these acid catalyzed substitution reactions are labeled as Syl (substitution, nucleophilic, unimolecular) and S2 (substitution, nucleophilic, bimolecular). Tertiary alcohols follow the Snl route, primary alcohols follow the S2 route, and secondary alcohols can follow either path. Under acidic conditions, the mechanism (Figure 1) of the Sul reaction involves rapid protonation of the alcohol, followed by the...
