Well the first step of making a graphic like that is to figure out how often the words in some text occur, which is exactly what this function will do. You will count the number of occurrences of the words in a text file and store the data in a cell array representing word, frequency pairs. Before counting words, you will need to clean the text files a little. You should remove all non-alphanumeric characters. An alphanumeric character is defined as all upper and lower case letters, all numbers and spaces. Everything else should be removed from the text file. After this process is complete, a word will be defined as any sequence of alphanumeric characters separated by one or more white space characters or at the beginning or end of a string. Case should not factor into word matches. So ' letter' and ' Letter' should be interpreted as the same word. Finally, you should output the word list in order of decreasing frequency. For example, if the given text file contained the single line: The cow jumped over the moon! Then this function would output the following cell array: {'the', 2; ... 'cow', 1; ... 'jumped', 1; ...
