Answer #1

a )

given

east west direction 140 m

and north south direction 120 m

now

r1 = 3 X 120 = 360 j

r2 = 4 X 140 = 560 i

r3 = 4 X 120 = 480 j

r4 = 1 X 140 = 140 i

along east direction the displacement is = 560 + 140 = 700 i m

along north direction the displacement is = 360 + 480 = 840 j m

the magnitude is = ( 7002 + 8402 )1/2

= 1093.44 m

b )

the direction is

= tan-1 ( 700 / 840 )

= 39.8o N of E
