The Clean Air Act of 1970 was aimed at improving the air quality by reducing air pollution. Thus, protecting the ozone layer and facilitating public health. This act empowered the federal Environmental Protection Agency to take immediate and effective action against those who were causing air pollution.

However, it lacked to create awareness among all the citizens such that they proactively contribute towards reducing air pollution and protecting the environment. Thus, amendment to the act in 1990 eliminate or discontinued completely the use of cheimicals and other substances which directly caused harm and were depleting the ozone layer. Secondly, it helped reduce the lead content in gasoline.
