First determine by the pH if the ABG is ACIDIC or ALKALINE.
Second determine by the levels of CO2 or HCO3 the ABG is METABOLIC or RESPIRATORY.
If the pH is acidosis and CO2 level is acidosis then the ABG is RESPIRATORY ACIDOSIS.
If the pH is alkalosis and CO2 level is alkalosis then the ABG is RESPIRATORY ALKALOSIS.
If the pH is acidic and HCO3 level is acidic then the ABG is METABOLIC ACIDOSIS.
If the pH is alkalosis and HCO3 level is alkalosis then the ABG is METABOLIC ALKALOSIS.

CO2 B. H0...
13. A male patient, age 24, is admitted to the ER after an acute barbiturate overdose. Results from an arterial blood gas are as follows. Evaluate the information to determine respiratory or metabolic acidosis or alkalosis, and determine if compensation has occurred (2 points) Patient values: pH 7.29 HCO3- 25 mEq/L Pco2 70 mEq/L Po2 70 mm Hg Normal values: Arterial blood gases (ABGs): pH 7.35-7.45 Pco2 45-35 mm Hg Po2 80-100 mm Hg HCO3- 22-26 mEq/L

Brian, an 80-year-old man with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory infections, was admitted through the ER with a chronic cough and extreme dyspnea. He complained that he was unable to climb the stairs or anything that required any exertion (even washing his hair). He had been a heavy smoker, but had been attempting to stop smoking by cutting back on the number of cigarettes per day. The nurse noted his temperature was 101.2 °F. Arterial...
