First determine by the pH if the ABG is ACIDIC or ALKALINE.

Second determine by the levels of CO2 or HCO3 the ABG is METABOLIC or RESPIRATORY.

If the pH is acidosis and CO2 level is acidosis then the ABG is RESPIRATORY ACIDOSIS.

If the pH is alkalosis and CO2 level is alkalosis then the ABG is RESPIRATORY ALKALOSIS.

If the pH is acidic and HCO3 level is acidic then the ABG is METABOLIC ACIDOSIS.

If the pH is alkalosis and HCO3 level is alkalosis then the ABG is METABOLIC ALKALOSIS.
