Answer #1

Meiosis is referred to as the reductional division. It is essential for maintaining constant chromosome number and genetic variation.

Even before the discovery of meiosis, many scientists speculated the presence of a mechanism that maintains constant chromosome number in a given species. They have counted the number of chromosomes in a given species over many generations using morphological studies (For example, staining techniques like karyotyping) and found that each species maintains its constant chromosome number over generations. They also found that body cells contained two sets of chromosomes while the reproductive cells (gametes) contained a single set of chromosomes. These initial findings lead to the elucidation of meiotic division.

Can anyone help me with this? Thank you. Lab 13. Mitosis and Meiosis Purpose The purpose of this lab is to understand the process of mitosis and melosis in animal and plant cells. Learning Objectives After completing this lab, you will be able to: 1. Describe the stages of mitosis. 2. Identify the stages of mitosis in an onion root or whitefish blastula using a light microscope. 3. Describe how cytokinesis differs in plant vs. animal cells. 4. Name and...

Unit 3 Study Resource Meiosis • Process by which diploid cells create haploid cells NOT part of the cell cycle > only some cells ever undergo meiosis During meiosis I, homologous chromosomes line up to allow them to be separated into two new cells o They can become "tangled" during this phase, which leads to crossing-over (rearranging the alleles) O Result of meiosis I is two non-identical haploid cells Meiosis Il looks very similar to mitosis, in that sister chromatids...

    2. A dominant allele H reduces the number of body bristles that Drosophila flies have, giving rise to a “hairless” phenotype. In the homozygous condition, H is lethal. An independently assorting dominant allele S has no effect on bristle number except in the presence of H, in which case a single dose of S suppresses the hairless phenotype, thus restoring the "hairy" phenotype. However, S also is lethal in the homozygous (S/S) condition. What ratio of hairy to hairless flies...

PLEASE SUMMARIZE THE 4 (numbered 1-4) ARTICLES TO 4 SENTENCES FOR EACH NUMBER. THANKS. 1. Medications have to be safe for mothers-to-be and for their unborn children. Before the authorities will approve a new drug, it must be tested in animal trials on pregnant rodents and, as a rule, pregnant rabbits. Scientists in the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel have now developed a test that allows them to examine a drug's embryotoxicity in cell...

Prologue: Alice Kaninchenbau was a 20-year-old junior at Boise St. University, where she majored in Political Science and played as an open-side flanker on the women's rugby team. In the last game of the season (against Weber St.) she suffered a broken nose (and the team suffered a 0-36 loss). Always an optimist, Alice considered her broken nose to be the perfect reason to have a rhinoplasty (and get the nose she had always wanted). The case: The antibiotic erythromycin...
