It’s the non-verbal communication that emerged first and certain facial expressions emerged over a period of time that also became universal. When people lived as nomadic, they had some internal emotions hard wired into their genes which was very much intuitive. All the expressions evolved and came into contact while people started to come into contact with other groups thus, were able to understand the facial expressions when there was no verbal communication. Facial expressions for happiness, sadness, disgust, fear etc. seems to be universal across all the cultures. Thus, the emoticons that are used today is the result of this universal appeal.
