Answer #1

1) using snell's law

1.35sin30 = 1.5sin\theta

=>  \theta = sin-1(0.45) = 26.7437o

2) using snell's law,

1.3sin(\theta) = n2sin20

=> n2 = 3.8009sin(\theta)

Note:  \theta is not visible in the picture, you can get n2 by just plug in the \theta value in the above relation.

    When a light ray travels from a more dense medium to a less dense medium and the light ray intercepts the interface at some angle, the light ray will be deviated away from the normal to the interface.  When the angle of the incident light ray is equal or greater than some critical angle , the light ray will be bent away from the normal unit the angle of refraction becomes 90, and total internal reflection occurs.  The critical angle,  , for two...

    To practice Tactics Box 18.1 Analyzing refraction. If a ray refracts between medium 1 and medium 2, having indices of refraction n1 and n2, the ray angles θ1 and θ2 in the two media are related by Snell's law, n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2. This law becomes a central idea in a procedure for analyzing refraction problems, as explained in the following Tactics Box. Draw a ray diagram. Represent the light beam with one ray. Draw a line normal to the boundary. Do this...
