consider a system of two carts. one cart, mass of 0.500 kg, is at rest. the other cart has the same mass, and is moving at 18 m/s to the left, towards the first cart. what is the total momentum of the system, before the collison?

Answer #1

Total momentum of the system = momentum of first cart + momentum of second cart

One cart is at rest, so the momentum ( mass x velocity ) of the cart is zero.

Momentum of other cart = 0.500 kg x 18 m/s = 9.00 kg . m/s

Thus, the total momentum of the system is 0 +  9.00 kg . m/s =  9.00 kg . m/s
