The reaction which leads to the breakdown of a compound into two or more components at least one of which must be in the elemental state is called as decomposition reaction.

The reaction inwhich an ion (or an atom) in a compound is replaced by an ion (or an atom) of another element is called as single displacement reaction.

a). ZnSO4 + Mg -------> Zn + MgSO4 -----Single displacement reaction

b) Ba(ClO3)2 ---------> BaCl2 + 3O2 ------- decomposition reaction

c) 2NH4NO3 -------> 2N2 + 4H2O + O2 -------- decomposition reaction

d) CaO + CO2 -------> CaCO3 -------- combination reaction
