Q3 (a) A falling head permeability test was conducted on a soil sample with diameter of 76 mm and sample length of 70 mm. The sample was connected to a standpipe of diameter 1.5 mm, where the water level (total head) was measured to drop from 1.56 m to 1.18 m in 65 s. Determine the coefficient of permeability of the soil sample.

(b) Explain why it is more preferable to conduct the falling head test, instead of the constant head test, for the soil in 3(a). If the same soil sample (with same dimensions) was subjected to the constant head test, with head loss of 245 mm across the sample, how long would it take for the outflow to fill up a 1-litre beaker?
