Bronsted - lowry bases : a bronsted lowry base can be defined as a substance which has the tendency to accept a proton. for example carbonate is a base in water as it accepts proton ( H+) from water .

reason : this claim is always true because a negatively charged cation always have lone pairs on the atom carrying the negative charge.since these negatively charged anion are electron rich , their lone pairs can attack on H of water molecule to abstract proton and thus form OH-
