The two main focuses used in statistics are- descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

Descriptive statistics uses the data to provide descriptions of the population either through numerical calculations or graphs etc.

Inferential statistics makes inferences and predictions about a population based on a sample of data taken from the population in question.

Descriptive statistics quantitatively described features of a data sample, while inferential statistics made inferences about the populations from which samples were drawn.

Descriptive statistics: A coin was tossed ten times and came down heads six times.

Statistical inference: The maximum likelihood estimate of the probability of Heads is 0.6
