5.DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER AND AN APPLICATION SERVICE PROVIDER

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER:

Internet Service Provider(ISP) is an organization or a company which provides a service of connecting the user to the world of Internet.ISP acts as a gateway between the user and internet.

Though the user has a fancy computer with a modem or router,he needs to be first get an Internet connection.This so called connection is given by a company and they are ISPs.

In general we think we are talking to our friend directly through email but it's not.,indirectly our email goes to ISP servers and then to the destination server through email.

Types of ISPS

1.Dial up services

2.High speed Internet-------offered by cable companies

3.Digital line subscribers.----------offered by phone companies.

4.Fiber optical  Broadband----------fiber is hundreds times FASTER than cable or DSL.

By 2013, dial-up services were rare (even though they were cheap), because they were very slow...and the other ISP options were typically readily available and much, much faster.

Typically, ISPs also provide their customers with the ability to communicate with one another by providing Internet email accounts, usually with numerous email addresses at the customer’s discretion.

Other services, such as telephone and television services, or personal websites or home pages may be provided as well. The services and service combinations may be unique to each ISP.

Example of internet service provider:

AT&T,Verizon,BSNL,JIO,AIRTEL, and other local cable distributors...All these are some of the examples of ISPs.

APPLICATION SERVICE PROVIDER

Application service provider(ASP) is a company which provides computer based services over the internet,such as an application or software.In simple words,it provides the user to access a software over the internet.

The need of ASPs evolved because of the increase in cost of the specified softwares,which has become a burden for small or medium businesses.Using ASPs the cost is reduced and also the issues of upgradation was also solved.

There are several forms of ASP business. These are:

• A specialist or functional ASP ----- single application
• A vertical market ASP ------delivers a solution package for a specific customer type

• A local ASP ---------delivers small business services within a limited area.

Examples of ASPs

• Email providers
• Web hosting providers
• network services and etc...

The main difference between ISPs and ASPs is :: Only if the user is connected to the Internet,then he will be given access to use ASPs.So,for using ASPs the user needs ISPs

DSL is a modem technology that is provided by telephone lines(landline) to transport high bandwidth data.DSL draws significant attention from implementers and service providers. This is because it delivers high-bandwidth data rates to dispersed locations with relatively small changes to the existing telecommunications infrastructure.

Moderate range DSL speeds of 10-25 Mbps are great if you’re looking for affordable internet for light to medium use, like checking email, streaming video on one or two devices, and occasional gaming.

Advantages:

• No additional wiring is required.
• Low cost
• Modems will be provided by the service providers
• User can use the both telephone line and internet at a same time.And it is because the voice is transferred on other frequency and digital signals are transferred on others

Disadvantages:

• DSL Internet service only works over a limited physical distance
• The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet

Cable Internet Connection

Cable internet is a form of broadband internet access which uses the same infrastructure as a cable television.Cable Internet provides connectivity from the Internet service provider (ISP) to the end users in a similar manner as digital subscriber line (DSL) and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH).

Cable is highly reliable and isn’t subject to outages due to storms, like satellite internet. However, because the network is connected by neighborhoods and areas, you can get slowed speeds during peak usage times when a lot of other cable internet users are online. This doesn’t happen with a DSL network, which keeps a consistent internet signal because the phone wires are connected directly to your home.

I prefer cable network to DSL because of the following reasons

• Cable network is best for multiple devices running simultaneously and uses internet.
• It provides high speed internet.
• No connection issues except for slow internet during peak times.
