Seafloor spreading and tectonic activity is due to the process of mantle convection. The mantle convection process is slow,stirring motion of the earth's mantle. The heat from the lower mantle and core are carried by the convection currents to the lithosphere. The recycling of lithospheric materials get back to the mantle is also done by the convection currents.
