Answer #1

The following mechanisms are responsible for thermoregulation in our body.

Temperature of our body can be increased by heat production or by preventing heat loss

Temperature of the body can be decreased by reducing heat production or by increasing heat loss

Decrease heat loss

  • Put on warmer clothes
  • Vasoconstriction of skin arterioles
  • Curl up ( reduce surface area)

Increase heat loss by

  • Sweating
  • Put on fewer cloths or remove clothing layers
  • Vasodilation of skin arterioles

Increase heat production

  • Food intake
  • Shivering thermogenesis (thermogenesis means heat production)
  • Secretion of epinephrine (non shivering thermogenesis)

Decrease heat production

  • Decreased secretion of epinephrine
  • Decrease voluntary muscle movement
  • Decrease food intake
