  • All living organisms are made up of organic and inorganic components.
  • The molecules found in living organisms are together called as biomolecules.
  • Those molecules which contain carbon are called organic compounds and those molecules which do not contain carbon are called inorganic compounds.
  • Organic compounds includes carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids etc
  • Inorganic compounds includes elements, water, gases, acids etc
  • Carbohydrates or polysaccharides are the polymers of subunits called monosaccharides. The monosaccharides may be of one single type (in which case the carbohydrate is called homopolymer) or multiple types ( in which case it is called heteropolymer). The adjacent monosaccharides are linked by glycosidic bond. The carbohydrates are the major reservoirs of energy.
  • Proteins are made up of monomers called amino acids. Proteins are heteropolymers since they consist of a chain of 20 types of amino acids. The adjacent amino acids are linked by peptide bond. The proteins enact the role of hormones, transporter, enzyme, antibody etc.
  • Lipids are either only made up of fatty acids or both fatty acids and glycerol. The fatty acid is linked to glycerol by ester bonds. Lipids are a major component of cell membrane and may act as steroids too.
  • Nucleic acids are made up of monomers called nucleotide. Each nucleotide is made up of a nitrogenous base, a pentose sugar and a phosphate group. The adjacent nucleotides are linked by phosphodiester bond. Nucleic acids carry genetic information of an individual.
