Q17) in the given question they have asked for the least soluble substance in water, so methanol , hydrochloric acid and NaCl is more soluble in water in comparison to octanol, this is due to the reason that octanol has a long hydrophobic carbon chain which makes it less soluble in water, although it has hydroxyl group which helps in making hydrogen bonding with water, but 8 - membered carbon chain makes its solubility less. Whereas Nacl which is an ionic compound dissociate when dissolved in water, methanol forms hydrogen bonding with water which makes it more soluble in comparison to octanol which has a long hydrophobic chain of 8 carbon. HCl is a strong acid and it dissociate completely on being dissolved in water. So octanol (c is least soluble.
