Question

1.5 m

A playground toy has four seats, each 5.9 kg , attached to very light rods of length r = 1.5 m , as seen from below in the figure.

If two children, with masses of 15 kg and 23 kg , sit in seats opposite one another, what is the moment of inertia about the rotation axis?

Express your answer using two significant figures.

Answer #1

here,

r = 1.5 m

mass of each seat , m = 5.9 kg

m1 = 15 kg

m2 = 23 kg

the moment of inertia about the rotation axis , I = ( 4 * m + m1 + m2) * r^2

I = ( 4 * 5.9 + 15 + 23) * 1.5^2

I = 829.35 kg.m^2

the moment of inertia about the rotation axis is 829.35 kg.m^2
