  • Knowledge is power.
  • It is always advisable for a couple ( who wish to start a family) to undergo genetic screening.
  • It helps the couple to be aware of the possible risks/chances of giving birth to an offspring with genetic anomalies.
  • However, the state should only play a role of an advisor and not that of a decision maker.
  • The final decision has to be with the couple only.
  • If they think that they are mentally, financially and physically capable of raising a child with genetic defects, they should have the chance of getting married.
  • Having the relevant information will mentally prepare the couple.
  • This makes life easy.
  • Similarly, if they choose otherwise they should have that opportunity as well.
  • Therefore, states should offer pre- marriage genetic screening and counselling as well.
  • They should provide the couple with correct information ( based on scientific evidence).
  • The couple should have the final say in this matter.
