Answer #1

As of now, there is no medication that has been identified for treating exercise addiction. However, exercise addiction maybe thought of as a behavioural addiction for which treatment usually includes exposure therapy and response prevention. It is noteworthy, however, that exercise addiction can occur in conjunction with an underlying eating disorder or distortions about one’s body image. For instance, individuals suffering from anorexia and bulimia can exercise compulsively in order to prevent themselves from putting on weight. On the other hand, a distorted perception of the body may also lead to a excessive exercise rituals. In such cases, the exercise addiction becomes a symptom and is not the complete problem in itself. Thus, treatment would then focus on tackling the underlying thoughts and beliefs that is leading the individual to that particular behaviour.
