An event whether natural or man-made, becomes a
disaster if the event become
uncontrollable in a relatively short time. It is deemed
disaster once a serious disruption is noted.
Moreover, minor to significant losses, which can
either be life or economic in nature, become evident once an
event becomes a disaster.
A natural event only becomes a
disaster when it impacts human life, property, or
livelihood. The greater the number of vulnerable populations living
in an at-risk area, the more likely an event will
be categorized as a catastrophe.

As nurses make up the majority of healthcare providers, they represent an indispensable workforce during disasters. The fundamental attributes of the nursing practice are to provide care to the injured or ill, assist individuals and families to deal with physical and emotional issues and work to improve health and well-being within the community. These attributes require competent nurses who are ready to respond in all situations, including in the event of a disaster. Nurses must be able to adapt their skills from focusing on individuals to large numbers of patients, both in their delivery of lifesaving and emergency care and in the maintenance of public health. Therefore, disaster training for nurses is vital. Nurses must be involved in all phases of disaster planning in order to increase their understanding of their role and expected contributions in response to a disaster.
