Question

MFD and spot size

The fundamental mode of a fiber is modelled as Gaussian. Find the spot size and the mode
field diameter (MFD) if the V number is (a) 1 (b) 1.5 (c) 2 (d) 2.4 and the core radius is 4 μm.
Use the following empirical relatioship to calculate the spot size w/a = 0.65+ 1.619/(V )^3/2 +2.879/(V)^ 6 , where w is the spot size and 2w is the MFD. Explain the variation in MFD with V number. Explainthe reason behind the variation in MFD with V number by assuming there is no change inoperating wavelength and core radius.
