Answer #1

Convection is the process of heat transfer by the means of moving fluid. This is the process which helps in boiling water. The heat is transferred from the bottom of the pan to the top by upward moving water. When the hot water from below moves up, the colder water from the top moves down. This cycle effectively transfers the heat from the bottom to the top layer. Heat transfer in the atmosphere also takes place due to the upward movement of hot air and subsequent downward movement of the cold air mass. This cycle of air movement is limited in the lowest layer of the atmosphere. This layer is upto 8 km height near the poles and 18 km near the equator. This is the height of the Tropopause. Air mass below this height experiences convection. This portion has been marked on the given image.
Heat convection also takes place in the mantle layer of the earth. This layer is below the lithosphere layer. This layer is absent in the picture. Mantle remains in a semi molten state and there is a steep temperature gradient prevailing in the mantle. This helps in the movement of the semi-liquid layer.

Exercise 5: I was changing 34 around too much that I just made it a separate exercise. Suppose 310. grams of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is in an aluminum cup of 90.0 grams. Both of these are at 30.0C. A mass m of ice at - 8.5C is taken from a freezer and added to the alcohol in the cup. The final temperature of all the components is 18.0C. Assuming no heat was lost from the system, calculate the mass m...

(33%) Problem 3: Warm blooded animals are home otherm that is, they maintain an approximately constant body temperature. (For humans it's about 37°C.) When they are in an environment that is below their optimum temperature, they use energy derived from chemical reactions within their bodies to warm them up One of the ways that animals lose energy to their environment is through radiation. Every object emits electromagnetic radiation that depends on its temperature. For very hot objects like the sun,...
