10) A graduate student in gerontology was interested in volunteerism in the elderly and if it leads to increased life satisfaction. He recruited 50 elderly participants who self-reported volunteering at least once a week for a charity or similar organization and 50 elderly participants who self-reported that they do no volunteer work of any kind. The groups were matched in terms of age, health and socio-economic status. He administered a standard Life Satisfaction questionnaire to each of his participants. When he compared the two groups, he found that the mean Life Satisfaction score for the volunteer group was significantly higher (i.e., better) than the group that did not volunteer. He concluded that volunteerism was responsible for this difference in life satisfaction between the two groups and that more elderly individuals should be encouraged to engage in volunteer work. Do you agree with the student’s conclusion? Why or why not? If you agree with the student’s conclusion, explain why his study was a good one. If you do not agree, how would you change the study?

What (if anything) is problematic about the way students were assigned to the groups, and how should the instructor have assigned participants to...

Read the following abstract: Previous research has shown that ostracism even by outgroup members is aversive. In this study we examined whether ostracism by a particular type of outgroup, a despised outgroup, was sufficient to inflict emotional distress. We manipulated ostracism using Cyberball, an on-line ball toss game. Ostracized participants reported lower levels of belonging, self-esteem, control, and meaningful existence, and more negative mood, than included participants. Moreover, ostracism by despised outgroup members was no less aversive than ostracism by...
