Answer #1

Hybrids are produced when individuals from two different species mate in hybrid zones. The hybrids have abnormal number of chromosomes which do not allow viable gametes to form.

This generally happens because the diploid cells of hybrids have odd number of chromosomes, (say 63), and thus it is not able to undergo meiotic division to produce gametic cells with half the chromosomes than in diploid condition. (Half of 63 will be fraction). Thus, hybrids are not able to reproduce and are called inviable or sterile.

Reproductive barrier ensure that individuals of two different species do not interbreed and different species are isolated to keep their identify intact. Reproductive barrier can be of two types : pre-zygotic barrier and post-zygotic barrier.

Hybrids are example of post-zygotic barrier to keep the species distinct and prohibit individuals of different species from interbreeding. This keeps the two different species intact and isolated. This doesn't give rise to any third species.

For example, mating of female horse and male donkey produce a hybrid, called mule. Mule is unable to undergo reproduction and hence cannot produce its progeny. Thus, mules do not form a different species.

Hence, correct choice should be:

(C) Hybrids are born in a hybrid zone. They are unable to breed with one another to produce offspring. This would likely cause the hybrid zone to act like a reproductive barrier keeping the two original species as separate species.

NTRODUCTION Under nearly all circumstances, postzygotic reproductive isolation cannot evolve under the direct action of natural selection. Instead, postzygotic isolation evolves as a by-product of other genetic changes as proto-species diverge. In contrast, natural selection can directly act to enhance prezygotic reproductive isolation. Consider two species with overlapping ranges. If hybrids between the species are less fit than pure species individuals, females that mated with heterospecific males would be at a selective disadvantage, because their resulting offspring had low fitness....
