Salmon spend much of their lives in the oceans but migrate up freshwater rivers and streams...
Salmon spend much of their lives in the oceans but migrate up freshwater rivers and streams to spawning locations to reproduce and ultimately die. As the salmon migrate upriver, their excrement provides as significant input of nitrogen into the soils immediately surrounding the rivers and streams. In the absence of these nitrogen inputs, the soil is very N poor. The trees growing in the immediate vicinity of the streams require large amounts of nitrogen to produce photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll which is vital for the growth and reproduction of the trees. Small mammal populations like chipmunks and squirrels rely on the seeds of these trees as a winter food supply. A land manager who manages a large tract of land with many salmon spawning streams and rivers decides to put dams on many of their streams and rivers. The dams prevent the salmon from traveling further upstream. Based on this scenario, draw an interaction diagram for salmon, trees, and small mammals and describe how damming the streams will affect these interactions. Remember to include indirect interaction in your diagram
