Kohl berg proposed a moral theory in which he explained that how people develop moral values. There are mainly three moral stages according to his theory. Those are preconventional, Conventional and post conventional stages.

  • In preconventional stage, people believe that a behavior which brings rewards is good behavior and a behavior which brings punishments is bad behavior.
  • In conventional stages, people believe that a behavior which follows societal rules, constitutional rules, cultural rules, etc. is good behavior. Otherwise that is bad behavior.
  • In post conventional stage, people follow their own conscience eventhough it opposes societal rules,cultural rules,etc. Following conscience is good and avoiding conscience is bad in this stage.

In the above-given case, the person believing that the husband should not steal the drug to save his wife, because it is illegal to steal. It means the person is following constitutional rules. That's why he is in conventional stage.
