Photosynthesis in plants is carried out to produce ATP, NADPH and carbon containing sugar molecules. This process is carried out by the fixation of carbon dioxide by the help of Rubisco enzyme in the mesophyll cells. This pathway is often termed as calvin cycle or the C3 cycle. Rubisco enzyme has a setback in its functioning, it can bind with oxygen molecule and reverse the action of calvin cycle, known as photorespiration.

Some plants use different methods to fix carbon dioxide by using different enzymes.

C4 plants use PEPcase enzyme to fix carbon dioxide molecule to form PEP. The PEP is further utilized to form oxaloacetate which is taken up by bundle sheath cells to continue the calvin cycle. This cycle is used during daytime, in hot and dry climates.

In CAM plants, stomata opens only during night. Therefore, PEPcase fixes carbon dioxide molecule during night only. Next day, carbon dioxide is released to continue the calvin cycle. The opening of stomata during night conserves the water in the plants.

C4 plants use mesophyll cells to fix carbon dioxide and then then transfer it to bundle sheath cells to carry out the calvin cycle.

CAM plants use the partition in time to fix carbon dioxide in mesophyll cells.
