Answer #1

According to Global Status Report for Building and Construction released recently by UNEP ( United Nations Environment Programme), construction industry accounts for nearly 40 percent of global emissions.

Along with this, it produces wastes of heavy materials like steel, concrete, bricks, wood and so on either due to construction, demolition, renovation of buildings, roads, bridges. If not managed properly it will bring further havoc to land.

Case study:

Let's take the case of India. Though it has low per capita carbon emissions, it's third major contributor of global emissions.

According to report of Delhi based Non Profit organization Centre for science and environment, only 1 percent waste is being recycled out of 150 MT (Million Tonne) of Construction and demolition wastes produces per day.

On the other side, demand for primary building materials are increasing manifold. If the wastes generated are recycled ,it could be substituted for natural materials.

Solid wastemanagement (Swm)

Wastes identified:

1. Broken bricks

2. Broken gravel

Approach

  1. Broken bricks, gravel, remaining sand are crushed along with water

  2. Binder is added to it and thoroughly mixed

  3. It is pressurized into customized moulds

  4. Strength is checked

Here it is to be noted that due to pressurization, the energy used on firing the kiln is avoided.

Factors involved:

  • Since the bricks bought was fired at kiln, it is difficult to recycle immediately.

  • Hence it is dissolved in water initially to remove all the mortars and debris

Advantages:

  1. The new material created has zero embodied energy

  2. The pollution which would be created by dumping the wastes is avoided

Disadvantage:

  1. The recycled brick has to be checked for strength. If required strength is not obtained, repeat the process with change in composition, which requires laboratory support.

Therefore, by recycling the construction wastage , it creates the circular economy with zero emission along with saving the water bodies, green spaces, public areas from dumping of wastes.
