Answer #1

Let the total mass of compound be 100 g

we have mass of each elements as:

Ca: 29.4 g

S: 23.5 g

O: 47.1 g

Divide by molar mass to get number of moles of each:

Ca: 29.4/40.08 = 0.7335

S: 23.5/32.07 = 0.7328

O: 47.1/16.0 = 2.9438

Divide by smallest to get simplest whole number ratio:

Ca: 0.7335/0.7328 = 1

S: 0.7328/0.7328 = 1

O: 2.9438/0.7328 = 4

So empirical formula is:

CaSO4
