Answer #1

b.) Answer of part a given as factor of safety is equal to 1.3 which is considered to be too low for the proposed development.

In order to improve the stability or to increase the factor of safety apart from the methods like reducing slope hieght and slope angle is:-

To reinforce the soil of the slope with materials like either sheet pile or geotextiles etc. As these materials improve the soil properties in terms of shear strength , bearing capacity and stability by densifying the soil mass as soil particles come closer upon reinforcement due to which effective stress between soil grains increases and void ratio decreases as a result of which soil mass get densified and strength increases which prevents the slope failure.

Thus in this way stability of slope increases also factor of safety increases. FOS equals the ratio of shear strength by shear stress. here shear strength increases upon reinforcement so factor of safety and stability increases also.

     4. In a beehive, each cell is a regular hexagonal prism, open at one end with a trihedral angle at the other end. It is believed that bees form their cells in such a way as to minimize the surface area for a given volume, thus using the least amount of wax in cell construction. Examination of these cells has shown that the measure of the apex angle e is amazingly consistent. Based on the geometry of the cell, it can...
